Dr. Bastos is a hematologist-oncologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach where he serves as the principal investigator of the Columbia University Minority Underserved only NIH-sponsored NCORP program in South Florida as an affiliate institution.
Dr. Bastos earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil, in 2001. He then completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He further pursued specialized clinical fellowship training in developmental therapeutics (Phase I) at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA.
Dr. Bastos was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Council of the Florida Center for Brain Tumor Research by former Florida Governor Rick Scott. He also received in 2023 the Casey DeSantis Florida Cancer Innovation Fund award from Florida Health to support his work to study ethnical disparities in clinical trial enrollment. Additionally, he has been recognized as a Top Oncologist in America for prostate cancer treatment by Newsweek magazine.
Dr. Bastos is deeply committed to providing personalized patient care in oncology. He is actively engaged in the medical community, having served as a lead speaker in international/national/regional presentations at forums such as ASCO, ESMO, AACR, and ASCO-GU. He has also led numerous expert roundtables, focusing on GU oncology and developmental therapeutics.
As a principal investigator, Dr. Bastos has led numerous clinical research trials, focusing on drug development and Phase I studies in areas such as tumor-agnostic, precision oncology, target therapies and GU oncology. He continues his current active research in closing the minority gap in cancer care, serving in many advisory boards on this field.
Passionate about education, Dr. Bastos is an active mentor in the ASCO Volunteer Corps Mentorship Program, guiding early-career oncologists. He also serves on the ABIM Board of Hematology as a writer and board member and is an assistant professor at Florida International University, where he serves on the admissions committee.
Dr. Bastos is a member of several esteemed professional organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Society, the National Hispanic Health Foundation, the European Society of Medical Oncology, the Japanese Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society for Neuro-Oncology, the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
Fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Dr. Bastos strives to bridge language and cultural gaps in his practice and outreach.
